Apple will give users temporary unlimited storage for free to facilitate data transfer when purchasing a new device.

Non-paying iCloud accounts are capped at 5 gigabytes of free storage and that is sometimes a hurdle for people wanting to transfer their files from their old iPhones without a computer.

Apple said during the WWDC 2021 event that it will grant free unlimited storage for people who are transferring data from one device to another. It is giving three weeks for users to obtain a new device, and transfer their data to it.

“When you buy a new device, you can use iCloud backup to move your data to your new device, even if you’re low on storage. iCloud will grant you as much storage as you need to complete a temporary backup, free of charge, for up to three weeks. This will allow you to get all your apps, data and settings onto your new device automatically.” Apple said.

Apple also announced a new iCloud+ service that is included for all paying iCloud customers. This includes Private Relay VPN, Hide My Email capability, and support for unlimited HomeKit video cameras. The iCloud+ service will also support custom domain names for email with the ability to invite family members to join you. This is similar to the services offered by Google Workspace and Microsoft 365.
