The impact of new coronavirus outbreaks in Taiwan recently is set to further strain semiconductor supply and the production of mini-LED screens that will be used in the next MacBook Pro upgrade.

According to a twin report from Digitimes and Bloomberg, sources within the supply chain say that mass production for the expected 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pro might be delayed. This is currently happening with the recently announced 12.9 inch iPad Pro that features similar display technology.

Digitimes further reports that issues with the production yield affecting the iPad Pro is due to the concern over potential rise in COVID cases. The coronavirus is currently affecting Foxconn and Winston in India, and if the recent surge in Taiwan continues, volume MacBook Pro production may slip to Q4 2021 or Q1 2022.

Mini-LED is a new form of backlighting that is used for LCD screens and offers many of the same benefits as OLED. It offers increased brightness and improved power efficiency. And unlike OLED panels, it has a lower risk of burn-in.

We expect Apple to announce new lineup for the MacBook Pro with updated Apple Silicon during its WWDC 2021 online event on June 7 10AM PST.
