Inside iOS: How to change the name of your iPhone or iPad

What's in a name? Apparently if you are an iPhone user, it may mean a lot. With more than one billion devices out there, each iPhone has to be unique.

Have you ever experienced someone who tried to send you an picture via AirDrop and they didn’t know who you are among the list of people because your phone name is still named an iPhone?

Your iPhone and iPad’s name shows up in a number of places like when sharing via AirDrop, using the Find My app, Managing it when connecting to your Mac, viewing iCloud backups and more.

How to change your iPhone or iPad name

  1. Go to Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Click on General > About > Name.
  3. Click your current name, delete it, and enter a new name.
  4. Click Done.

Now that you have changed your iPhone name, you can also change the details of your contact card. Just go to the Contacts app, and tap yourself at the top of the app, and choose Edit in the top right corner. Tap Done when finished.

You can also change the name of your Apple device by going to the Find My app.
