AirPods Pro Automatic Switching

AirPods and AirPods Pro are great listening device and with the recent update, it allows for seamless connection to whichever Apple device you’re using. This allows for you to use your AirPods while watching a movie in your MacBook and when a call comes in, it automatically switches the connection to your iPhone. This feature is an example of the use of the powerful Apple Ecosystem in a world of multi-connected device.

This feature works with iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 or later, macOS Big Sur and works with AirPods and some Beats branded headphones (Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro, Solo Pro). Your devices has to be updated to the latest firmware. Please note that you have to be signed in to the same Apple ID on your devices.

How to check and update your AirPods with the latest firmware

The latest firmware for AirPods is 3A283, which replaced versions 2D15 and 2D27. This update enabled Spatial Audio and allowed Airpods to automatically switch between your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch depending on which device you’re using. To check your AirPods or AirPods Pro’s current version:

  1. Make sure your iPhone or iPad is connected to your AirPods or AirPods Pro.
  2. Go to Settings App.
  3. Go to General and then tap About.
  4. Click on your AirPods.
  5. You’ll see details about your device, including the current firmware version.

AirPods and AirPods Pro are designed to update automatically. To update your AirPods, you have to make sure that your AirPods are in their charging case and is currently charging. Also make sure that your AirPods case is near your iPhone that is connected to a WiFi network. After a few minutes you can check if your AirPods have been updated to the latest version. Our test came back updated after 10 minutes in that condition.

After updating your firmware, Automatic Audio Switching will be turned on by default and it works like magic. Whenever you’re watching a movie in your MacBook or iPad and a call comes in, the audio switches automatically to your iPhone for you to take the call and the movie pauses itself. Once you’re ready to go back to your movie, just hit play and the AirPods connects itself back to your MacBook or iPad. That all happens in real time. Just like that, magic!

When your AirPods or AirPods Pro automatically switches from your iPhone to another device but you don’t want them to, you can click on the blue arrow in the Moved to notification that appears at the top of your device to stop the audio from transferring.
